     Memotech Software Downloads

COPYRIGHT NOTICE - Please read.

Very few of the programs here have been formally released into the Public Domain and copyright is still held by the original authors and publishers. However, after all this time, I imagine that very few of the authors would object to people using the software or me distributing it. Even fewer of the original publishers still exist. However, if you are the holder of the copyright to any of this software and object to its being here, please let me know and I will remove it.

There are a number of titles not available on this page - if you have a copy, I'd very much appreciate you letting me have a copy.

Using the Software - With an Emulator

Many of the best games (and other software) are distributed with Andy Key's "MEMU" emulator, see the MTX Emulation page for more details.

A number of the programs need specific options selected on the MEMU command line to  run properly - the full list of MEMU's command line options are explained on Andy's site here. If you want an easy way to run Memotech games under MEMU, check out Paul Daniels' GameBase on the MTX Emulation page. Using the Gamebase handles the required options for you, making life much easier.

Bill Brendling has also written a python script to launch MEMU - it is really useful - and is also on the MTX Emulation page

As a minimum, under Windows, MEMU should be invoked in the form :-

MEMU -tape-dir [path to .mtx files] -vid-win -vid-win-hw-palette -snd-portaudio [game.mtx]

MEMU Option Meaning
-tape-dir  is optional if the .mtx files are in the same directory as MEMU is invoked from
-vid-win means emulate the VDP driving a 40 column screen (TV) for games etc.
-vid-win-big (or -v) means use a 40 column screen size more appropriate for a modern PC monitor
-vid-win-hw-palette means use a colour palette close to the original MTX TV output
-snd-portaudio (or -s) means use the portaudio sound driver (distributed with MEMU)

Once the MTX "Ready" prompt is displayed, most software will start after entering:  the LOAD "" command

Screen shots on this page were captured with MEMU running with the -vid-win option. This produces an emulated MTX display of a size similar to the original MTX screen resolution (256 x 192 pixels). On a PC with a reasonably sized desktop, the display is too small and MEMU command line switches can be used to expand the emulated display size, e.g., -vid-win-big will produce a display twice the size of the original. The command line option can be added multiple to times to size the display to best suit your monitor, e.g., -vid-win-big -vid-win-big etc.

Most of the software below is available in a variety of formats, including tape files (".mtx"), sound files (".wav", ".mp3) etc. Andy has a good explanation of the various file formats on his site, but in brief, the files available here are predominantly of the following types :-

Type Description
.mtx a binary copy of an MTX tape file
.run games for the SDX disk system to be run from MTX Disc BASIC
.bas games for the FDX or SDX disk systems, to be run from the associated BASIC program
.com games for the FDX or SDX disk CP/M systems to be run from CP/M

The files in the grey cells in the table are ones that I do not have a copy of - can you help?

Note: The type is shown in the File column, but all downloads have been compressed with WinZip. Click on the Zip file icon to download the file.

Some compressed files contain a couple of versions of the program having names such as "Program Name [A1].mtx" and "Program Name [A2].mtx" etc., these a different conversion attempts for the same tape file, you may have more success running one rather than the other. Files that I have successfully run with MEMU are marked such as ".mtx", this does not mean that the others do not work - just that I have not tried them. I am in two minds whether to include all versions of the tape files in the archive, or just the ones that I have verified working with MEMU - I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on the matter?

Audio Files

If you want to run these games on real Memotech hardware, many of them are also available in audio format for loading through the MTX tape input from a CD player or PC sound card output. Audio files of most of the software are available from MTXWorld, either as individual audio files or on a CD image for download. A small number of audio recordings of the software that I have owned is available on this page. You can however, make your own "tape" files from any of the .mtx files on this page - courtesy of Paul Daniels, use the Z88DK AppMake program that you can find on my Development Tools page.

Update: 2023

Nassim Bakir has collected a large number of MTX games in .wav format. Nassim has kindly made many of these files available here (denoted by "NB" in the table). I have added them to the table below as both uncompressed .wav files and after compression to .zip format with 7-Zip

CP/M Programs

The CP/M programs on this page are those programs or program versions released specifically for the Memotech CP/M systems (FDX or SDX). These systems will also run generic versions of software released for CP/M 2.2, a number of these programs are available for download from the Memotech CP/M pages.

Using the Software - On Real Hardware

Whilst running on an emulator is a good way to revisit the software, for a truly authentic feel, you really need to run the software on original hardware, i.e., on a Memotech MTX computer. Of course, once the novelty of loading from tape or audio file has worn off, they are painfully slow ways of loading software!

Thankfully, there are modern hardware add-ons for the MTX that allow digitised "tape" files (.mtx) and other formats to be loaded from Compact Flash (see my CFX and CFX-II pages) or SD card (see Andy Key's REMEMORizer). Both of these products emulate Memotech's original disk systems and programs are loaded/saved from Memotech's BASIC or CP/M environments.

The simplest way to run a pre-loaded selection of games on real hardware instantly is to use MAGROM.

Converted from other platforms

As the table above shows, there were only around 120 games originally produced for the Memotech computer and that is where it would have ended, if it were not for Claus Baekkel (www.mtxworld.dk). Claus converted John Dondzila's Space Invasion from ColecoVision to MTX way back in 2001 before embarking on a conversion spree in 2012/2013.

There are a few more games in the pipeline too - well done Claus!
