The Memotech MTX Series

Memotech Related Tools

This page contains tools that may be useful for users of the Memotech MTX range, if you know of anything else that might be useful to others, please let me know and I will post it here.

The Software Development page contains details of the use of the Z88 Development Kit (Z88DK) with the MTX.

Tools on this page are divided into three main categories:-

PAL14L4 Reader

Memotech computers and expansion boards, including ROM/RAM memory cards, disk controllers, the RS232 interface and the Speculator, all make extensive use of PAL14L4s to implement custom designed logic. The PAL equations for the more common boards are shown in the User and Maintenance manuals. Although Memotech probably did not "blow" the security fuses, making it technically possible to read back the fuse maps for the other PAL, tools for reading the configuration of these devices are not common today.

Tony Brewer made a PAL14L4 Reader and wrote the Z80 code to control it. With Tony's help, I have drawn up a schematic for the PAL reader interfaced to the MTX User I/O Port. You can see the details of my prototype on this page

EPROM Programmer

Bill Brendling brought along this EPROM programmer to Memofest 2013, Bill created this in the 1980s to help with his other electronic projects, giving him the ability to program EPROM devices using his MTX via the parallel port.

Bill has kindly provided a sketch of the original design, I have taken the sketch and drawn up a schematic using KiCAD. You can see the details of the programmer, along with the schematic, on this page

Bill Brendling

PIC Programmer

Another of Bill's tools that he brought along to Memofest 2013, Bill created this in the 1990s to help with his other electronic projects, giving him the ability to program PIC devices using his MTX via the parallel port.

Again, Bill has kindly provided a sketch of the original design, I have taken the sketch and drawn up a schematic using KiCAD. You can see the details of the programmer, along with the schematic, on this page

MTX Diagnostic Board

Originally designed as part of my MTXPlus Project, using a simple adapter, the Diagnostic Board can be connected to a standard MTX to display the values on the address and data buses, as well as the status of the control bus and other signals.

For full details, go to the MTXPlus Diagnostics Page

VGMPlayer - Paul Daniels has written a VGM Player for the MTX and created a set of .mtx files for the Lemmings tunes. All the files are included to reassemble.

If you want to drive someone nuts, leave this running at full volume!

by Paul Daniels

Lemmings Demo - Paul has also put together a .mtx that plays the two samples extracted from the SMS version of Lemmings. The attached file includes all the files to reassemble. "Note it doesn't work on Memu unfortunately but does on Mess 0.122 and probably 0.118. I'd be interested if anyone runs it on a real MTX to know how it sounds." by Paul Daniels

HABit Version 3 - Wordstar Document Conversion Tool from the wordstar.org site

Works on NewWord Documents too, converting them to formatted text.

Tony Brewer

A "Mickey Mouse" Microsoft Word 2010 Macro to replace German "special" characters with their UK keyboard equivalent.

(I use it with the MTX User Club Germany PD Library to make text files readable.)

ImageDisk - Disk imaging program by Dave Duffield (Freeware) - Version 1.18 Dave's Old Computers
The programs in the green cells are utilities that I have used myself and know to work with Memotech disks and/or images. The other programs are ones that I think should be useful, but have not gotten around to trying them - yet!

* * *    A word about the Sydex downloads on this page    * * *

Sydex Inc. created many of these disk tools in the late 1980s, at that time, they were available as Shareware, that is, you could download the products, try them out, then if you continued to use them, you paid the registration fee. Often , paying the fee released additional features, for example, extra disk definition files were provided with the registered version of Teledisk.

Sydex subsequently sold the rights to their software to New Technologies Inc. (NTI), although a company called New Technologies Inc. still exists, it looks like they are unrelated to the original NTI. I am not sure of the licensing position of these programs, but I am sure that they are still the "intellectual property" of NTI and/or Sydex. Given the age of the material here and the limited interest in the subject matter, I believe that the software here can be distributed without restriction. However, if you believe that you have rights to this software and are unhappy at its presence here, please get in touch.

The ImageDisk program by Dave Duffield is functionally equivalent to Teledisk and is Freeware.
